Sepsis remains one of the most challenging conditions to identify early in the emergency department. Patients may present with nonspecific symptoms, evolving organ dysfunction, or overlapping signs of infection and inflammation, while treatment decisions often need to be made before the full clinical picture is clear.

This complimentary webinar explores the role of Procalcitonin (PCT) in the ED assessment of suspected sepsis, including how it may contribute to diagnosis, risk assessment, rule-out support, antibiotic decision-making, and treatment follow-up.

The session will also discuss how PCT can be interpreted alongside clinical findings, lactate, CRP, SOFA/qSOFA criteria, microbiology, imaging, and other investigations to support a more complete assessment of patients with suspected infection or sepsis.

Through practical discussion and clinical case examples, Dr. Sorin Taus Finder and Nduku Ndunda will examine where PCT can add value, how results should be interpreted, and what ED teams should consider when applying biomarker testing in acute care.

Why attend?

This session is for ED clinicians who want a practical, case-based discussion of sepsis assessment and the role of PCT in supporting clinical decisions.

Rather than treating any single biomarker as a standalone answer, the webinar will focus on how PCT can be interpreted in context: alongside the patient’s presentation, vital signs, organ dysfunction, lactate, CRP, microbiology, imaging, and clinical judgment.

During this session, you’ll explore:

  • Why sepsis diagnosis remains challenging in the ED
  • How Sepsis-3, SOFA, and qSOFA have changed the clinical approach to sepsis assessment
  • The biological role and kinetics of Procalcitonin in bacterial infection and sepsis
  • How PCT may support diagnosis, rule-out assessment, and risk stratification
  • How PCT can complement lactate and CRP in patients with suspected infection or sepsis
  • The role of PCT in antibiotic decision-making and treatment follow-up
  • Practical clinical case examples, including bacterial sepsis and viral sepsis with later bacterial superinfection
  • How point-of-care testing can bring relevant biomarker information closer to ED decision-making

Who should attend?

This webinar is especially relevant for ED physicians involved in the assessment and management of patients with suspected infection, sepsis, respiratory infection, or acute inflammatory presentations.

It may also be of interest to ED nurses, POCT coordinators, laboratory professionals, and acute care teams involved in diagnostic pathways, biomarker testing, antibiotic decision-making, and patient flow.
